Herro Mustafa began her tour in Lisbon, Portugal as Deputy Chief of Mission in July, 2016, and assumed the role of Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. on January 20, 2017. Previously, she was the Political Minister Counselor at Embassy New Delhi. Prior to working in India, Herro was an Advisor to U.S. Vice President Joe Biden from 2009-2011, providing counsel on issues related to the Middle East and South and Central Asia.
As part of her Foreign Service career, Herro was Deputy Director of the Afghanistan Office, acting Chief-of-Staff for Under Secretary for Political Affairs William Burns, and an Advisor on the Middle East for former Under Secretary Nicholas Burns, where she was closely involved in the P5+1 talks on Iran.
Herro was Director for Iran, Israeli-Palestinian Affairs, and Jordan at the National Security Council from 2005-2006 and Director for Iraq and Afghanistan from 2004-2005. Before that, Herro was the lead U.S. Civilian Coordinator in Mosul, Iraq; a Consular Officer in Beirut, Lebanon; and a Political Officer in Athens, Greece.
Herro grew up in Minot, North Dakota and speaks Kurdish, Arabic, Farsi, Greek, Hindi, and Portuguese. She has an undergraduate degree from Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service and a Masters from Princeton University. She is married and has a young daughter. A new daughter is arriving!

The aims of this Association are not limited to one area. They extend to every field, both vertically and horizontally. We continue to defend the values of freedom, tolerance and solidarity, values that have always characterized the history of the United States, and which continue today, in a more universal form, to be the values that the United States defends intransigently with great resources and the blood of it sons and daughters.

The aim of the Associação de Amizade Portugal - EUA (Portugal - USA Mutual Friendship Association) is to promote cultural, social and economic exchange between two communities with historical ties of undeniable importance. The two communities are the Portuguese and Americans living in the USA and Portugal. The Association is simple proof of interdependence at several levels, a positive element in the shared existence of two peoples who, although different in their own special ways, also share the same love of freedom and, consequently, respect for the role of each individual in building societies that aim constantly higher in their human existence.
